Picture it

You come up the ramp and enter through the main entrance. Directly ahead, you see the nursery. You expect you’ll be visiting that room quite a lot in the next few months, when the baby comes. But for now, you need a stop in the room to your right: the restroom. With five fully enclosed stalls and two changing tables, there’s rarely a line.

Leaving the restroom, you cross to the meeting room. Thanks to the glass top half of the wall between the lobby and the meeting room, you can see nobody is speaking at the moment, so it’s a good time to sneak in late.

After the meeting for worship is over, you wheel past the stairs on your right to the elevator and push the button for the second floor. When the doors open, you find a brightly-lit room full of tables. Kids who were in the basement classrooms and other Friends who took the stairs are emerging from the hallway to your right, which includes two single-occupancy restrooms. Members of the Hospitality Committee busy themselves, moving in and out of the commercial-grade kitchen at the far right, setting up the potluck lunch.

After potluck is over, you take the elevator back down to the ground floor. It’s not time to go home yet, though. You have a committee meeting in the new library, right across from the elevator doors. It’s so convenient having the library in the meeting house these days. It used to have to share space with a classroom in the white house.

Based on discussions flowing out of Adelphi’s 50th Anniversary celebration in 2006, Meeting began to feel that the current building configurations do not fully meet the needs of the community. Potluck lunches are cramped and noisy, many parts of the campus are inaccessible to those with limited mobility, the buildings are not fully air conditioned and air quality is poor in the basements, and there are not enough suitable rooms for our robust children’s program.

Meeting spent several years evaluating and deliberating design solutions to expand and renovate our facilities. This included holding an extensive design process facilitated by an architect. In 2013, Meeting adopted design criteria to guide the process. Based on excitement and momentum that developed through these discussions, Meeting decided to proceed with raising initial funds for the project through a Capital Campaign in 2014. That effort raised nearly $750,000, largely in three-year pledges that have now been paid. After extensive discussion, research, and discernment, Meeting for Business reached unity in 2016 on the design concept for the expansion and renovation.

In mid-2018, the project gained momentum as the Building Committee hired an owner’s representative to manage the process and began interviewing architects. In January, 2019, an architect was selected and has now been retained. In early 2021, the permit process was completed.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”What will the new building look like?” _builder_version=”4.9.4″ hover_enabled=”0″ open=”off” sticky_enabled=”0″]

The plan is to add a two-story space to the front of the existing Meetinghouse, expand the lobby, and renovate the basement. The Design Criteria specify a new large social space with a new kitchen on the second story, additional classrooms, better circulation, and accessible restrooms. The Meeting room will not be enlarged but will be upgraded with new windows, better wall and ceiling finishes, improved lighting, and an assisted listening system.

A detailed rendering of the outside of the building can be seen at the top of this page.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”How will the new building affect the life of our community? ” _builder_version=”3.29.3″ open=”off”]

The new space will make the Meeting a more welcoming place for visitors and long-time members of our community alike. The entire Meetinghouse building will be fully accessible, with accessible restrooms and an elevator; improved circulation through the building; air conditioning throughout; and better access between the Meetinghouse and the White House.

Improvements to the lobby will be more welcoming for newcomers and more comfortable for those who arrive late to Meeting for Worship. The larger social space and kitchen will make potluck less cramped and more suitable for special events. Additional classrooms will give our young people dedicated spaces for their activities.

The new spaces will also be available for a wide range of Meeting events and committee work. The plan includes investigating the possibility of opening the Meeting Room walls to the expanded lobby for additional capacity for weddings and memorials.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”What’s the project timeline?” _builder_version=”4.9.4″ hover_enabled=”0″ open=”off” sticky_enabled=”0″]

We have an architect, a site plan, and a building permit. The permit is valid through 2024. The exact start time will depend on when we can pay for it.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”How much is the project going to cost?” _builder_version=”4.9.4″ hover_enabled=”0″ open=”off” sticky_enabled=”0″]

The current estimate is that the entire project will cost about $2.9 million with consultant costs and County permit and review fees included.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”How is the Meeting going to pay for the project?” _builder_version=”4.9.4″ hover_enabled=”0″ open=”on” sticky_enabled=”0″]

From our two capital campaigns, we have already raised $1.5 million.

We will likely need to take out a mortgage, which would also require increasing our regular annual income to cover the payment. Meeting may also need to take out a shorter-term bridge loan if building expenses are due before pledges are fully paid.
